As you plan your hybrid or online course, you may want to include the use of asynchronous videos that you and/or the students create. These videos could cover many topics, such as introductions, updates, feedback, assignments, and lectures, among others. To do this, we recommend you use Warpwire, Zoom, Loom, or a combination of these applications. Using asynchronous videos, created by the instructor and/ or the students, is an effective way to add content and background to the topics covered and enhance the discussions during the synchronous sessions.
Warpwire
Warpwire makes it easy to capture and manage video within Moodle. Support Documentation. Here’s how to add Warpwire to your Moodle Course.
Applications
The following types of videos can be captured using a webcam or a mobile device using Warpwire OR any video can be uploaded to the class Warpwire folder.
- Introduction videos (instructor and students)
- Recurring video updates for students
- Video feedback on assignments
- Student presentation and project videos
- Student video responses in forums.
You can do a slide presentation recording with narration using screen capture.
You can do a slide presentation recording with talking head recording using capture beta (generates multiple video files) or screen capture with computer webcam application (generates a single video file).
For field work, labs, theater courses, etc, you can capture up to four different video sources simultaneously using capture beta (generates multiple video files).
Editing
You can clip the beginnings and endings off of your videos directly in Warpwire without having to use another editing application. You can also create a shorter segment from a longer video.
Storing and Sharing
You can upload other videos into your Warpwire course folder to make them easily available to students.
Videos captured or uploaded will be available through the Moodle course in the Warpwire folder
Videos captured or uploaded will also be available in Warpwire in the course folder.
Videos can be shared with the entire class of students, a small group of students, or a single student.
Videos can be embedded and links can be sent via email.
Both instructors and students can sign in through Moodle or Warpwire to view the videos.
All videos will be removed from Warpwire following the semester. If you want to keep the videos, you will need to download them and store them in another location. Be aware of slow download speeds.
Video Quality
Video quality ranges between 360 and 720 HD.
Zoom
Zoom is the recommended application for live sessions and office hours, but can also be used for recording videos.
Applications
The following types of videos can be captured using a webcam using Zoom.
- Introduction videos (instructor and students)
- Recurring video updates for students
- Student presentation and project videos (students would use their own Zoom account)
You can do a slide presentation recording with narration by sharing your screen and recording. If you have your video on, you can share your screen and have your face shown during the video.
Storing and Sharing
Zoom recordings need to first be stored in the cloud to access machine generated captions. Once the video has been saved, it will then need to be downloaded and stored in a Dropbox folder or a Google Drive folder that is shared with students.
Video quality
Video quality ranges from 360 to 1080 HD.
Loom
Loom is a video recording tool that lets you easily record your camera, microphone, and desktop simultaneously. Many instructors like it for its ease of use. You can then embed your video in Moodle, or share the link with your students.
Education licenses are free, but we do not have an Enterprise account. There is no single sign on. Both sharing and captions require more steps than with our supported software.
Sharing videos
Instructors must embed the videos in Moodle or upload the videos to Warpwire, Dropbox, or Google Drive for students to have access (students should not be told to create Loom accounts as they are not needed to view the videos).
Automated Captions
Loom does not have any third party vendors they work with to easily create automated captions. In order to follow UDL principles, you will need to download your video and upload to Youtube to create automated captions.
